Most people only think about shingles. But a new roof is a complete system, every layer working together to protect your home for decades. Here is how DuraMax does it.
When we think about home repairs, installing a new roof is arguably the most important project you can invest in. A roof protects everything beneath it. If an old roof fails, water can destroy attic insulation, damage ceilings and walls, and work its way all the way down to your basement.
On this page we cover everything that goes into a full roof replacement, including the complete roofing systems DuraMax installs using Owens Corning and GAF products, how ventilation works, warranty coverage, and what a real project looks like from start to finish. Take a look at our roofing process page for even more detail, or browse our recent projects to see completed DuraMax roofs across the Mid Hudson Valley.
DuraMax installs complete roofing systems, never just shingles on top of existing problems. Here is every layer we address on every job.
Before anything goes on, we inspect the roof deck for rot, soft spots, and structural damage. Any compromised decking is repaired or replaced. Everything else depends on a solid foundation.
An 8-inch aluminum drip edge is installed along all roof perimeters. It prevents wind-driven rain from entering at the edges and protects the fascia from water damage over time.
A self-adhering membrane is installed at all eaves, rakes, valleys, chimneys, skylights, pipe boots, and vents. This is your roof's primary waterproofing layer against ice dams and wind-driven rain.
A breathable, UV-stabilized synthetic felt is installed over the remaining exposed deck. It acts as a secondary moisture barrier and keeps your home protected even if a shingle is ever lifted or damaged.
Pre-cut starter strips with factory-applied adhesive are installed at all eaves and rakes. Using cut-up shingles as a starter course is an outdated shortcut. We never do it.
High-quality laminate shingles installed in the color and profile you choose. We offer the full Owens Corning and GAF shingle lines, both with lifetime-limited warranties and proven performance in the Mid Hudson Valley climate.
Intake vents at the soffit draw cool air in. Exhaust vents at the ridge release trapped heat and moisture. Without balanced ventilation, heat buildup and moisture accelerate deck rot, shingle curling, and energy loss.
Purpose-built ridge cap shingles are installed over the ridge vent, sealing the peak of your roof and finishing the installation with a clean, dimensional look that complements your shingles.
Metal flashing is installed at every transition point: chimneys, skylights, pipe boots, wall intersections, and valleys. Flashing is one of the most common failure points on a roof. We do not cut corners here.
DuraMax installs complete roofing systems, not just shingles on top of problems. Every layer above is included in every full roof replacement we do.

Ventilation is one of the most important parts of a roofing system and one of the most commonly skipped. Without it, heat and moisture get trapped in your attic and quietly destroy your roof from the inside out.
Attic ventilation works on a simple principle: heated air rises. A properly ventilated roof takes advantage of this by using two types of vents working together. The general rule of thumb is at least 1 square foot of ventilation for every 300 square feet of attic floor space, split equally between intake and exhaust. Building codes vary by municipality, so we always verify compliance with your local building authority during the permit process.
Located at the lowest part of the roof under the eaves or in the soffit. They draw cool, fresh air into the attic from outside. Most commonly installed as individual vents spaced along the soffit or as one continuous perforated soffit panel running the full length of the eave.
Located at or near the peak of the roof, typically as a ridge vent running the full length of the ridge. Hot, moist air rises naturally and escapes through these vents. This passive exchange keeps the attic cool in summer and dry in winter, without any power or moving parts.
Poor ventilation is one of the most common causes of premature shingle failure, wood rot, ice dams, and high energy bills. It is not an optional upgrade. It is part of every complete roofing system DuraMax installs.
We select ventilation products from our two certified manufacturers based on what works best for your specific roof geometry, attic layout, and local code requirements. Click either brand below to see the products.
A flexible rolled ridge vent that installs along the full peak for continuous exhaust ventilation. Low profile disappears under ridge cap shingles.
Works with VentSure intake vents to create balanced airflow. Exhausts heat and moisture at the ridge while filtering out weather and pests.
An over-the-deck intake vent that draws fresh air into the attic without soffit modifications. Ideal for homes with limited or no soffit depth.
A low-profile rigid ridge vent with an internal weather filter that blocks rain, snow, and insects while allowing continuous hot air exhaust at the ridge.
A flexible hand-nailable rolled ridge vent that conforms to any roof pitch. Provides effective continuous exhaust ventilation along the full ridge length.
An over-the-deck intake vent for homes without traditional soffits. Installs near the eaves on the roof deck to pull fresh air into the attic.
Not sure how much ventilation your attic needs?
GAF offers a free ventilation calculator to help estimate the right amount of intake and exhaust for your home.
Because DuraMax is certified by both Owens Corning and GAF, we can offer warranty coverage that most uncertified roofers simply cannot. The same two-tier structure applies to both manufacturers.
A workmanship warranty covers problems caused by how the roof was installed, not just the materials themselves. If a shingle lifts because of an improper nail pattern, or a leak develops because flashing was not set correctly, workmanship coverage means we come back and fix it at no charge. It is the warranty on the skill of the installer, not the product. Only certified installers like DuraMax can offer extended workmanship coverage through Owens Corning or GAF.
We register your roof directly with the manufacturer after the job is complete, so your warranty is fully activated and on file from day one. Learn more about our warranties.
